Advancement in Wireless Technology
The 20th century has experienced the rapid and exponential advancement in the computer technology and according to the prediction of Moore (Moore’s Law) the computation power has been doubled in every couple of years. One of the most important technological advancement of the 20th century was the rapid expansion of World Wide Web in the 90s. This interconnected millions of computers and billions of pages of information across the globe and was incredibly cheap and reliable way of sharing information across the globe.
With the advent of laptops and other portable computation devices the there was a sudden need of wireless networking and Internet connection. Moreover the development of cell phones and other mobile wireless technology changed the life style of the society to such an extent that it is could never be thought or dreamed of before. The dramatic development and advancement in technology has made a profound impact on the use of wireless in our society. This paper will discuss these technological advances and how they have affected the usage of wireless technology.
The first usage of wireless technology is dated back to the late 19th and early 20th century with the discovery of electromagnetic waves and the commencement of wireless data services and mobile radio. Radio stations were the first to use this technology. Later on antenna were developed which were able to transmit and receive motion pictures thus making the possibility of broadcasting and receiving through televisions. After the World War II AT & T started its first mobile telephone service and in 1970 its first cellular phone service. In 1971 the first wireless data network was developed in Hawaii University.
The use of cellular phones became common in the late 80s and 90s and in the year 1990 AT & T introduced first Wireless LAN product making wireless networking available for end-users for the first time. (Jain, 2008) Since then both cell phones and wireless LAN and Internet connections have seen an exponential growth. The mobile phones have developed into personal data assistants (PDAs), and Smartphone capable of doing a lot of computing that a pc can do. Moreover they are equipped with the latest wireless technology, which has enabled their users to connect to the Internet and interact with their customers and colleagues without any glitches.
This has increased the mobility and interaction of people who are bound to stay outside and work in the field and also require getting in touch with their customers or getting latest information via the Internet on the road. Laptops now equipped with the latest wireless technologies are also proving to be as useful in this regard. With their increased processing power, large memories in gigabytes and latest WiFi connections with blazing data transfer speeds in MbPs they have become a inevitable need for business travelers, students, researchers, photographers and movie makers.
(Jain, 2008) Recent advances in Wireless technology has made it possible for Laptops and Cellular phones alike to transfer huge amount of files, which were considered practically impossible few years ago. With the help of wireless access today’s students are always connected to the university or college resources. The students can do their research or given assignment practically anywhere in the campus. Moreover the flexibility does not limit the interaction between the teachers and students to the classroom only.
The teacher can contact, interact and even deliver lessons when the students or they themselves are outside the classroom. With the help of wireless network the students can interact with each other on the online discussion boards and other social networking apps etc. (Wireless LANs in higher Education, 2005) Recent advances in the wireless technology have made the equipments and tools related to wireless technology not only more speedy, but also more cost effective.
New wireless networking equipments are now so cheap that wired networking has become more costly than a wireless networking. Moreover the use of wireless Internet networking has dramatically increased and it has made it the most revenue generating industry as compared to cell phones and voice only networks. (Jain, 2008) The latest advances in the wireless technology include the 3G mobile technology, which has provided blazing fast internet connection, video conferencing and data transfer facilities to the latest mobile phones like Iphone 3G.
Increase of smart phones and PDAs is also because of dramatic advancement in wireless technology. Moreover the Voice over Internet Protocol is also becoming a mainstream protocol and is considered as the future of the wireless networking and Internet. Multi-Service IP i. e. Voice, Video and Data is another advancement in the wireless technology and will make the use of wireless Internet more reliable regarding to video streaming and transferring. (Heller, 2006) Teleconferencing on wireless devices will also become handy and cost effective with the spread of this technology.
While Internet gaming has become a norm the increasing high speed wireless Internet connections has made gaming on laptops and other mobile devices possible. Many new 3G mobile phones possess wireless gaming technologies thanks to their blazing fast Internet connection. The increasing use of wireless technology in RFID tags has change the way of inventory handling and supply chain management radically. The RFID tags has made inventory management more efficient and easier as well as the process of supply chain has become more integrated and smooth.
The above-mentioned advances in the field of wireless technology have made the mainstream use of wireless technology possible. Today there are more mobile subscribers in the world than landline phone subscribers. Because of the lower installation cost of wireless technology it is the choice in many developing countries and is very soon going to surpass globally as its usage has surpassed in the North American region.
