American History

The United States never made conscious decision to intervene in Vietnam between 1954 and 1964; rather it was sucked into an ongoing conflict. In my opinion, I disagree with this statement as efforts were made by the U. S government in making decisions about the war. Vietnam War is one of the most memorable wars considering the time it took before the war was over. The involvement of United States army was part of a solution to the war.. The U. S government supported South Vietnamese government and this led to rebellion in the south.

For example in 1955, United States government appointed Diem who headed the anti-Communist regime. Diem was elected as the leader in the Republic of Vietnam (RVN) and named Saigon as its capital city. Vietnamese communists and other non-communists nationalist considered this step as a measure against provisions of independence promised at Geneva. The government led to existence of oppositions in the South whereby majority of people represented in the South were businessmen, landowners and Roman Catholics.

The army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) was created in South Vietnam which aided Diem to take land from peasants and returned it to landlords (Herrington, 2007). The troops worked in direct conjunction with United States Special Forces in the villages with a view of convincing South Vietnamese people the importance of political organization. Advisers assigned to ARVN increased in 1961 after Kennedy took over leadership position. The U.

S troops moved in full scale and entered the South Vietnamese territory but communists claimed that it was against their provisions. An appeal thus was made regarding nationalism of the Vietnamese with a view of sending off the foreign army from the land. In 1964, the U. S initiated large scale bombing against DRV during the Gulf of Tonkin incident.
