Of the long list of Bible heroes, Joseph, the son of Jacob, is probably one of the well-known and favorite. Along with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and the prophets, Joseph, also known as The Dreamer has remained one of the most remembered Bible characters of the Christian Community. Through him, God have made the worst situations work together for the benefit of the people of Israel. Because Joseph has humbled himself, God continued to uplift his spirit. Because he remained faithful, God continued to guide Joseph.

Because he continued to share and loved other people, God continued to bless him. And because he has maintained an open and clean heart, God work through Joseph’s life to reveal His power, love and mercy to the people of Israel. The account of Joseph as a simple seventeen year old shepherd, to his sufferings in the land of Egypt, to his reign as governor, is found in the book of Genesis of the Holy Bible. In this paper, we will analyze how the major events in his life will serve as an inspiration and challenge for all Christians today.

The paper focuses on the characteristics he has exhibited and what we can learn from these. We will also look into how each dream he has interpreted has revealed God’s will in his life. II. JOSEPH AND HIS FAMILY IN THE LAND OF CANAAN Being the son of 1his old age to Rachel, Jacob loved Joseph so much. His attention was more focused on Joseph. And being a good son, he has gained his father’s love which made his brothers envy him. He once dreamed that he and his brethren were binding sheaves in the field.

His sheaf rose and stood upright and his brothers’ sheaves bowed down to his 1 Genesis 37:2 2 sheaf (Genesis 37:6-7). “And he yet dreamed of another dream and told his brethren and said, behold I have dreamed a dream more and behold the sun and the moon the eleven stars made obeisance to me” (Genesis 37:9). These dreams made his brothers exceedingly angry and envious because of the obvious interpretation of the dream that he will after sometime rule over them. Despite this, Joseph remained an obedient son to his father and a good and humble brother to his brethren.

Until one day, his brothers planned to kill him but came to a decision to just sell him to the merchants for 200 pieces of silver. In this scenario, God revealed His love for Joseph because of his clean heart. God did not let him die because his dreams have to come true. Although Joseph has to experience pain and sufferings from his own brothers, God has revealed His will in the dreamer’s life-he has to be God’s instrument in carrying out His plan for His beloved nation. III. JOSEPH IN THE HOUSE OF POTIPHAR

From the merchants, Joseph was sold to Potiphar, Pharaoh’s officer who then served as the captain of the guard. In the land too far from his family, God never left Joseph. In chapter 39 verses 2 and 3, it says, “and the Lord was with Joseph and he was a prosperous man…and his master saw that the Lord was with him. ” Instead of having self-pity, Joseph has done his best to serve Potiphar. Because he remained faithful, God blesses everything that he does which gained trust and confidence from his master.

Even the Egyptians who do not believe in God have felt that they are being blessed because of Joseph’s presence. Through Joseph, God made His way to reveal His power even unto those who do not believe in Him. Through Joseph, God had proven to Egypt how great the God of Israel is. However, life didn’t come out easy for Joseph. There came a point during his service to Potiphar that his master’s wife tried to seduce him. Because Joseph fears the Lord, he refused. Potiphar’s wife then crafted a story which made his master believe that he tried to rape his wife.

Joseph was then sent to prison where the king’s prisoners were being cast. This 3 is an indication that in the life of God’s servants, not everything goes smoothly. Not all things that come their way are pleasing in the eyes of men. Just like Joseph, our faith has to be tried first. Like gold which passes through test of fire, God has to put Joseph to series of painful tests; not to prove his worth as God’s servant but to strengthen his faith. Because he has passed through these tests, 2God has shown His mercy upon him and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. ”
