Epic of Gilgamesh
So many people have questioned the originality of the Flood story in Genesis 6-9. This is because before the Bible was written, there has been an Epic called The Epic of Gilgamesh which has a lot of similarities with that which is recorded in Genesis 6-9. In reality, they may have a basis for this claim as the Epic was actually written before Bible times, specifically about 2000 BC.
To begin with, not only are both of them flood stories, both accounts almost followed the same pattern. To exemplify this, In Genesis 6, the people were said to multiply in the world and they were out of control and deep in sin. This was also the case in Uruk where people bellowed and roared like wild beast. In both of these accounts, the punitive measure that was decided on was to wipe them off the face of the earth by a flood (Genesis 6:17).
Apart from this, in both accounts, one man was told to build a boat and the measurements and instructions are incredibly similar(Genesis 6:14-16). In both accounts, they were instructed to take the seed of all creatures so that they would continue life after the flood (Genesis 7:1-3). Furthermore, after the flood, there was a feeling of destroying what you have made and both men were blessed and they were to replenish the earth. However, there are a lot of differences in both accounts.
A good example is that in the Epic of Gilgamesh, there were a lot of people that were in charge of human affairs and made decision while in the Genesis account, there was only one God and He is supreme above any other. Apart from this, the gods In Uruk were deceived into making the decisions they made while God in the Genesis account is all-knowing and so can not be deceived by anyone. Also, the number of days that the flood lasted in both account is not the same.Sample Essay of Essayontime.com
