Folders and File Structures

The best way to make keeping of files easy and efficient is ensure that the file system is well-structured. Just like a cabinet full of clothing, or an office space full of many documents, the files and folders in a computer should be organized efficiently (Berger, 2007). By doing this, one can easily locate any specific files that one needs. (You can always use the search or find command of the computer but this will even require more effort and time for the user. )

There are two items in a computer that needs to be identified: the folders, and the actual files. To ensure that one is maximizing the proper way of organizing my file system and folders, one has to start with the general classification, and making sub-classifications our of it (Berger, 2007; Powell, 2007). In this case, the hard drive should initially have folders like Personal, Academic, Archives, etc. If I am to work on the file system and folder organization in my Academic folder, this would contain subfolders of my different classes or subjects.

For example, under the Academic folder, I will create folders for Social Studies, Computer, and other subjects that I currently have. This is already an efficient way of organizing my computer files and folders. If one wants to be more specific, additional folders can be created inside each subject, e. g. , Assignments, Lecture notes,

materials, etc. Below is an example of file system/structure: My Computer ? Personal ? Pictures ? Music ? Academic ? Social Studies ? Assignments ? Lecture notes ? Reference materials? Information Technology ? Assignments ? Lecture notes ? Reference materials ? [Other subjects] ? Archive ? 2006 Files References: Berger, S. 2007. Organizing your files and folders.
