ISTE NETS for 4th Grade Students

The International Society for Technology in Education or the ISTE has its National Educational Technology Standards or NETS for students which aim at advancing the use of technology for the educational benefit of learners. These standards spur the interest of students in experiencing the learning process in a new dimension. More importantly, these standards cater to the educational needs of students with consideration to the available technology and to the capacities of these students in grasping the knowledge.

Creativity and Innovation In the standard of creativity and innovation, students should be able to demonstrate critical thinking in a more creative manner, formulate knowledge, and create processes and products which innovates the status quo in the learning environment with the proper use of technology. More specifically, students should manifest the application of their knowledge to formulate fresh ideas, processes and products apart from what is commonly expected.

Digital Citizenship In the NETS labeled as digital citizenship, the students are expected to have a comprehension of issues pertaining to humanity, culture and society which are in relevance to the current technological trends. The students are also encouraged to practice legal and ethical behaviors in accordance to the present digital tools and environment.

More specifically, the 4th grade students have been deeply encouraged to participate in the advocacy for the safe, legal and responsible use of the digital tools that are given to them. More importantly, the 4th graders are regularly advised and guided to use the available information and technology to the best of their advantage within the parameters of legal and ethical norms. The school curriculum for the 4th graders is also designed to foster a positive attitude towards the use of digital tools in supporting an atmosphere of collaborative and productive learning among the 4th graders.

By combining a curriculum addressing the standard for “digital citizenship” with the actual efforts to meet the standard, the 4th graders are able to demonstrate personal responsibility in handling these digital tools which are aimed at a lifelong learning in the long run. Technology Operations and Concepts The last standard for the 2007 NETS is categorized as “technology operations and concepts”. Under this standard, the students are expected to show a sound comprehension of the concepts involved in technology as well as the operations and the systems behind it.

That is, the students should be able to comprehend the technological systems and apply these systems to their learning experience. The 4th graders have so far been able to choose and apply the digital applications more effectively and productively to the extent of having the capacity to troubleshoot the systems and applications on their own.
