Kepler’s Important Role
Tyco Brahe had a penchant for shrouding his researches in secret. He had significant discoveries for the field of astronomy that he mostly concealed from most and would not show to those who were not directly linked to him in any way. His work was mostly derived from that of Copernicus’ theories of heliocentricity, but he could not accept the Earth revolving around the Sun (Hannula, 2005).
Johannes Kepler applied as an assistant to Tyco in order to have access to his records, which Tyco would not have shown him. After Tyco’s death Kepler had a huge part in translating Tyco’s dissertations and endorsing them to the masses. If it were not for Kepler, much of Tyco’s work would not have been disseminated or would probably have been dismissed entirely (Hannula, 2005).
What Kepler did was summarize Tyco’s observations and present them in a logical, understandable format that was easily digested by the people in their time. After Copernicus and Tyco Brahe, geocentrism was still the more established notion aside from their other atypical observations. Kepler presented Tyco’s material in another manner and in doing so formulated Kepler’s Laws. Kepler enhanced and recreated Tyco’s pursuits by putting emphasis on the mathematical aspects of the theory, thereby lessening the need to use more words to explain the query. This led to the evolution of the information passed on from astronomer to astronomer, with the aid of physics (Hannula, 2005).
It was Kepler who largely supported Copernican theories that was studied mostly by Tyco. But Kepler kept Tyco’s discoveries as his own, but altered his methodologies. He did not “steal” these ideas, but instead reinvented them in a manner that can be largely accepted by the masses. Such is the exemplary role of Johannes Kepler in interpreting the data of Tyco Brahe (Hannula, 2005).
