Electric motors are devices that convert electrical energy into mechanical energy, while generators are devices that convert mechanical energy into electrical energy, both through electromagnetic means. Despite being opposites in terms of the type of energy that each device transforms, both operate based on the same principle of electromagnetic induction discovered by Michael Faraday. Both devices consist of a field or the electromagnetic component with coils, and the armature which supports the conductors that cut into the magnetic field to carry the induced current in generators or the exciting current in electrical motors.

Although both devices operate on the same basic principle of magnetism, electrical motors are those which utilize electric current to produce a magnetic field, whose strength and direction also varies according to the strength and direction of the electric current being employed. The electric current in a magnetic field will experience a force which is then carried into the wires that are looped at right angles to the magnetic field which in turn experiences the force in opposite directions. The same force then allows the torque to rotate the coil to transform electrical energy into mechanical energy.

Generators, on the other hand, are devices that move a magnetic field near a conduction wire to create a steady flow of electrons, which then transforms mechanical into electrical energy. Any charge moving through a magnetic field naturally experiences force, if the charge moves along the wire then voltage is generated. Rotating coils generate voltage in opposite directions, more voltage is produced. Generators are commonly used to transform mechanical energy into electrical energy fir commercial, industrial and home use. They also produce electrical energy in smaller units like cars and other transportation devices.
