Movie Visual Design
The effectiveness of the scene does not rely merely on the script and the performance of the actors but also on the visual design of the film. The visual design includes the color, the background settings, and the costume of the characters. This is commonly known as mise en scene which incorporates all the visual aspects of the motion picture. Through the proper combination of lights and colors, the movie would effectively transfer the information and messages that the film would like to convey to the audience.
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of the Fleet street is one of the movies with a very effective visual design. Released in 2007, the movie was a blockbuster in the movie houses, making the people experience the joy and suspense of watching this masterpiece in a different form. From being colorful, the movie transformed to low key lighting which most of the frames show darkness. In the scene where Sweeney Todd sings the Barber and His Wife, the movie portrays distinction between the flashback and the current situation in the story.
While Sweeney Todd sings, there was a sequence of frames which describe his wife. The faces of the characters in the colorful setting portray the happiness and affection that Sweeney Todd and his wife feel for each other. The combination of dark and colored lighting was applied to the man who ruined the marriage of the barber and his wife. The close up shot on Sweeney Todd’s portrayed anger and revenge which were also highlighted by his make-up and the color of his costume. Apparently, the use of color is very important in any motion picture.
This concept adds suspense or drama in a certain scene and trigger the emotion that the film makers anticipate from their viewers. Aside from the color of the setting, the design and color of the costume are also considered as important factor in the effectiveness of the motion picture. The costume portrays the emotion and status of the character which are not typically included on the script of the actors but can easily be seen by the audience because of the way film makers presented it on the movie.
With the use of color in the scene, the film will be able to transfer any message that the film makers would like to convey to the viewers and portray artistry and creativity which often make the film excellent for the critics and the audience as well.
