The sign reads “Thinkerbell. ” It glows on the side of the tree-lined road that leads to the offices of [Yourname]Tech International. “Offices” may not be the right term. The 63. 5-acre property is more than that. It is, in fact, a full-scale community complete with a hotel, training centers, a shopping mall and supermarket, a park with man-made pond, entertainment center, fitness center, restaurants, all catering to employees, guests and permanent and “occasional” residents. In this community, there are more Starbucks and McDonald’s stores than traffic officers in every other street corner.
Traffic is hardly a problem; the streets are wide enough for the golf cart-like vehicles that transport everyone to their destinations (the real cars are parked in a secure lot near the property’s entrance). This is Thinkerbell, the office-community headquarters of [YourName]Tech that has been tagged “the best example of a democracy. ” Not surprisingly. If [Yourname]Tech could provide telecommunications, technology, and security information solutions to cities and municipalities all over the world , it would do well to apply these solutions in its own backyard first.
Built in 2010, the site, originally built on five acres of property, was intended for the headquarters and training center for [Yourname]Tech’s growing population. In less than ten years, it expanded into a community, with [Yourname]Tech buying properties around the site. When [Yourname]Tech needed to test the IT solutions they designed for several Texas municipalities, [YourName], [your age in 2018], founder and CEO of [Yourname]Tech, built his own community faster than one could say IT.
“I could not implement our solutions on our Texan clients without trying them out first in our own backyard. The risks were too high; they involved lives of real people in real communities. “The thing about Thinkerbell is that it’s being run by an information system designed by the same people who benefit from it, so that when something fails and someone from the community detects it, you know that it’s going to be addressed right away,” explains [YourName]. “We can’t allow even just one minor failure to last overnight and take root. That is how a democracy should run. Let its people contribute to the development of the community, and when something goes wrong, allow them to offer solutions. This, of course, requires a great deal of discipline – and expertise – among its members.
” Discipline and expertise are, of course, two things one cannot expect from every member of every community. And this is where [YourName]’s Thinkerbell community differs. In order to be a part of it, one has to go through rigid qualifying exams and trainings. “Sort of like going through a Marxist system before reaching democracy,” he laughs. “Make no mistake. We are an equal opportunity employer, the only thing we don’t tolerate is lack of judgement. We have to eliminate prospective employees who lack this quality; they are hazardous to technology.
Even ignorance is tolerable and can be a good thing when used properly, but lack of judgement just doesn’t work anywhere, even in a democracy. The world has seen leaders spiralling down with their organizations because of wrong decisions. Born in [your birthplace] to a family that values integrity over money, [Yourname] grew up believing that every family was like his, so that his trust in people was unwavering. Until he learned to read the newspaper and learned about the corruption and atrocities happening in the various parts of the world. Then, at ten he had his first first-hand experience of theft. Parking his bicycle in front of a neighborhood store to buy candies, he expected to find it in the same place when he came back. It was a decent neighborhood, and he thought he knew and trusted everyone in the area.
To have his bicycle stolen in a place he had always considered safe was a major disappointment. But [Yourname] didn’t let that incident destroy his faith and confidence in people. He now knew that there were indeed Captain Hooks in the world, so he learned to be more careful. Young [Yourname] put a footnote on that incident. ” Raised by a father who drew his values and wisdom from experiences as a struggling rural boy and made it as an industry leader, and a mother who made sure he had a full breakfast, finished assignment, and neatly pressed clothes before he went to school everyday, [Yourname]’ lived a normal childhood. His parents were as normal as the next boy’s in the 1980s. Eat your vegetables, finish your meal, wash your plates, assignment first before TV. Saturdays were allowed for hanging out with friends. Sundays were for family. “Very traditional by any standards, actually,” he shrugs.
But for all the rather routinary upbringing, [Yourname]’s parents encouraged him to explore and seek adventure. He has always been very creative as a child, broaching ideas on how to do things more systematically, how to catch a frog faster for lab class, how to get to the mall without driving into traffic, how he could prove that there was indeed life in Mars. They were mostly childhood ideas that could make any adult laugh, others would brush them off as nonsense. But [Yourname]’s parents never laughed at his ideas; if they did, they tried to conceal it. Instead, they encouraged each idea, often asking, “And then?

They were generous enough to consider each idea even if they never really subscribed to them, like the one [Yourname] brought up about running a car using recycled cooking oil. “For one whole week one summer, I devised a six-page scientific solution that included math formula showing how to go about it. My father read all six-pages and asked the right questions. Some of the questions stumped me so I went on to make revisions until my father’s questions were answered and he had nothing else to ask.
The following day, thinking he had agreed to the idea, I started working on my formula, which included taking some parts of the family car apart. ” Dad caught [Yourname] at it. He didn’t exactly blow his top nor forbid him to touch the car, but he explained, patiently, perhaps all the time controlling his temper, that they couldn’t afford to lose the car to an experiment that could fail. As [Yourname] grew up, he began to think more sensibly, but he never lost the eagerness of a child and never stopped thinking out of the box and turning it over and over to get the results right.
At about this time, his business acumen began to show. When he got his first PC, he disassembled it to see what made it work. Like Humpty-Dumpty, he couldn’t put it back together so he sold each part, piece by piece. From his sales, he bought a new PC, adding part of his savings to come up with the exact amount to pay for the unit. After a few weeks, he disassembled the new PC again and went through the same process until he could buy another set. This process became a routine until he was able to finally put the PC back together and make it work the way he assembled it.
And then he sold it. In high school, [Yourname] was one of those quiet types who kept to themselves with just a few friends. He kept away from the geeks to avoid being branded as such. He abhorred stereotypes. “I loved school; I studied hard, but I also played hard,” he recalls. He was not exactly a straight-A student but he made good grades enough to win him scholarship at the [name of college]. [Yourname] knew he wanted to go into business, but what exactly, he wasn’t sure. Until he met [a classmate] in one of his classes.
Sharing the same interest in computers and the World Wide Web, they began to fashion a business formula that relied on information technology. They promised to themselves they would buy Microsoft and Apple and turn it into the single biggest computer company the world has seen. It started as a dream. And like great dreams, it became a reality. But it took some time before it happened. And Apple and Microsoft were nowhere in the scene, except in the hardware and applications they now use in their offices. Learning The Ropes From college, [Yourname] found himself employed at XYZ, a leading IT corporation at the time.
From day one, he tried to learn everything he could about the business, absorbing everything like a sponge. His drive, enthusiasm and zest for knowledge was not overlooked by the people who mattered at HR. Coupled with his business sense and natural talent in technology, he was soon getting a series of promotions until he was leading his own team. Serving people, catering to their needs the best way you can, making their lives easier. When you do that, you make life easier for you, too. The key is enjoy and believe in what you do. Then the profits come rolling in. ” Armed with knowledge and values he learned from graduate school, [Yourname] went back to his home company XYZ.
It didn’t take long before he realized that things were not the same. The chairman had retired and the man who replaced him didn’t share the same values and business sense as the old one. The global crisis was causing corporations to collapse and XYZ was not spared. It began giving its employees the boot. The large offices were diminished to cramped rooms to save on rent and utilities. He could not implement the big-corporation-ideas he learned from business school. Before only the core group was left working at XYZ, [Yourname] took action. He offered to buy the company.
He didn’t have enough money, but he had a plan. Recalling the dream he shared with [college friend], who was now CEO of his own IT business, he made the most important call of his life. In the late 2008, while [Yourname] was attending graduate school, Mumbai was attacked by Islam extremists. This brought [Yourname] sleepless nights thinking it could happen in any city.
If only a better security system was available for all cities in the world, he thought. If only someone could design an information system that would detect and prevent such attacks and provide security for each city. The attack was echoed in other cities the following year. A foundation has also been set up to provide educational opportunities for children of victims of violence in several cities across the globe. Recently, Thinkerbell was hailed by Fortune magazine as the best place to work at and [Yourname]Tech employees the happiest. “It is a happy place,” says [Yourname]. Thinkerbell was a name coined from “think” and Tinkerbell, the fairy from Peter Pan’s Neverland.
Thinkerbell, thus, means a place where happy thoughts abound and tinkering with new and old ideas is encouraged. “It’s for Peter Pans. And there is Peter Pan in all of us. There is no limit to what the imagination can do. Walt Disney proved that. Had he settled with just Mickey Mouse, we wouldn’t have DisneyWorld now. Should he agree, he is expected to win by a landslide. To be or not to be, that is the question. So will he? Run for governor, that is. “I’d be turning the State into one big playground,” [Yourname] laughs. Not a bad idea, that. But he demurs to his own suggestion. “No, a position in the government is not for me. Thinkerbell is big enough to govern, I don’t aspire for anything wider in scope than that. Besides, I can’t be trapped in one place to serve just one community. There are other cities that depend on me, on [Yourname]Tech solutions. I cannot fail them. ” Not even as a retirement option.
In fact, he doesn’t see himself retiring. “To retire is to grow old. I don’t want to grow old. There is so much that need to be done, and only a child can do it. But when it’s time for me to leave Thinkerbell, I think I know what I’ll do. I’ll do a Bill Gates. I may never have bought Microsoft, like I had dreamed as a young man, but I’m sold to Bill Gates’ idea of sharing your wealth and knowledge to the world.
