Education is very important in children development . Apart form learning that a child gets at home; schools and institutions play a very important role in imparting knowledge, good behavior, and skills in a child. This approach is based on four issues; an understanding that care givers do not control but need to give support, a belief that there is a reason behind a difficult behaviour,application of knowledge to understand and assist others, and the conviction that there is need to move away from coercion. Positive interventions and supports (PIBS) in a school system offers great benefits to children/students, the parents and the school staff. One advantage of PBS is that it assists the school staff and parents to create as well as maintain a supportive and safe learning environment for students. The behavior- based systems are very vital in enhancing the capacity of communities, schools, and families to promote a good learning environment for students.

School counseling has promoted a good learning environment by monitoring and encouraging the members of the community, family members, and the school authorities to develop an environment in which children can learn well. By focusing on the creation and sustenance of individual, classroom and school-wide supports, positive behavior support makes the desired and positive behavior in students functional. This becomes possible because problem behavior is made less relevant, and less effective through positive behavior supports (Bear et al, 2002).

Because positive behavior support needs a team that guides the development of a certain PBS strategy, there is need for schools to put into place a leadership team that acts as a guide to the implementation of strategies that aim at promoting positive behavior in students. For instance, in order for school counseling to succeed in promoting positive behavior in students, there is need to put into place a team that will ensure that counseling activities in the school are successful. This team should be able to identify the critical areas of student discipline that need to be addressed.

The school counseling programs are then designed to address critical areas of student behavior. The programs can then be able to promote positive behavior by motivating students to acquire good behavior instead of suspending or expelling them when they misbehave For students to work towards acquiring positive behavior, they must be able to realize that the school has a set of core behaviors it expects all students to embrace. Positive behavior support enables schools to develop a set of behaviors that all students should embrace.

When students acknowledge that it is important to meet the school’s core behavioral expectations, they can then focus on attaining positive behaviour. Positive behavioral supports in schools promote the participation of parents, students and the school staff in achieving the core behavioral expectations at school. For example, the realization that successful implementation of Positive Behavior Support strategies requires the cooperation of teachers, school staff, and students has encouraged the participation of all these parties in positive behavior support.

School counseling aims at ensuring that school as a social setting in which students or children spend most of their time in does not promote negative behavior in children. Because all students identify achieving the core behavioral expectations as a common goal, they tend to assist those with negative behavior to acquire positive behavior. Students are taught how to work as a team, hence positive behavior of one student acts as an example for other student. The students can be able to influence others to acquire positive behavior because what they learn during counseling is shared with the other students.

Although some students may show negative behaviours, others show positive behaviour. For these students to continue embracing positive behavior, it is important for the school system to reinforce the positive behavior . Assistance should be given to those who have difficult behavior. School counseling has become a very effective way through which reinforcement of positive behavior and assistance to those with difficult behavior is given . School counseling act as an important school-wide or primary intervention in promoting positive behavior. Intervention at the primary level prevents problem behaviors in students.

In this approach, the school authority and the parents work together to create a school environment, climate and attitude where only positive student behavior is promoted. Because efforts to promote positive behavior in students bring together the students and the school staff (support staff, teachers and administrators. ), school counseling can assist the school personnel to interact and relate appropriately with the students. School counseling in this case assists the students and the school staff to direct their efforts in undertakings that will prevent negative behavior in the school.

Counseling plays a preventive role when it provides guidance to the students on how to work towards achieving positive behavior while preventing negative behavior (Lehr and Christenson, 2002). Counseling becomes very critical at school when students who face problems outside the school environment are assisted to overcome the challenges. For example, some children experience difficulties at home and are unable to put aside the problems when they get to school. If these problems affect a student psychologically, it becomes difficult for them to concentrate in class.

Furthermore, the problems can trigger negative behavior in children who may be experiencing difficulties. To the students, becoming rebellious seems like an effective way of expressing what they might be going through. School counseling offers the children an opportunity to resolve the problems or difficulties they might be experiencing at home. To children who experience difficulties, school becomes the only friendlier and safer environment as compared to home. Offering these students guidance through counseling becomes a good way of assisting the students to overcome difficulties without necessarily getting engaged in negative behavior.
