The Athenians and Spartans

The classical period of Greece was the highest peek of their civilization. The Greek society was composed of the Athenians and Spartans. The Athenians used logic and democracy in their lives while Spartans practiced military and brute strategies. They encountered the Great War with the Persian invaders but because of their combined strength, they defeated the vast army of the invaders. The era was considered the flowering of philosophy.

It was the time when they started to search for truth using logic and reason. They were beginning to disbelieve that lighting was created by Zeus or that tsunamis was the anger of Poseidon. They started to uncover the mysteries of the universe. They were artistic and invented drama. The classical period was recorded by Herodotus who is the father of history. He tried to record the events during the classical period through memory and story telling.

It was quite hard to recall because he only used memory for the basis of his recording. His records of history were passed down with the use of story telling. He is the first oral historian in history. The second historian that came about was Thucydides. He recorded the Peloponnesian war through his own presence of the events. At the later part of the Classical Period, the tension between the difference of the Athenians and Spartans grew. The paper will later talk more about the Peloponnesian war.
