The Future of IT in Corporate America

IT has gradually crept into the corporate sector and has made phenomenal difference to the operations being run in organizations all across America. When Information Technology was introduced to the masses its potential was quickly recognized but with the eagerness to adopt IT into one’s organization, an excessive amount of spending was done with unnecessary attachments to the organization. Due to the lack of experience relating to IT, many companies made mistakes while setting up their IT structures and began losing money through the holes in the quickly established flawed system. The implementation of IT in organizations requires numerous other factors beside the latest technologies. It depends also on the willingness of the workers to adopt the new technology and their efficiency in using it. Researchers found that in the initial years of the advent of IT in organizations across America, the skill acquisition of the employees was very low and they were not so successful in working on the new systems (Brainin, 2006). Besides that, most organizations picked up on the latest systems and operating units thinking that the latest and most advanced technologies would be best for their businesses.

But that was not the case as those machines eventually became a burden as they could not be used to their full potential and they were being used for menial tasks. The heavy spending to acquire those machines and the lack of the return on investment caused millions of dollars to slip by organizations in excessive spending and losses. When IT departments began being established in companies, it created two different workgroups. The first one being the IT technicians while the other group was the business managers.

The business department felt that IT was hemorrhaging money from more important projects. Whereas the IT technicians felt that the business people were incapable of properly utilizing optimal output from the IT structures and that they ruined most of the machinery due to which the cost of maintenance of the machines rose (Martin, 2005). So we can conclude that in the early years of IT, when it was being introduced and implemented for the first time, there were numerous mistakes made in the process which led to a wary approach to implementing IT into successful organizations.

The Present and IT In recent years, people are becoming more techno-friendly and have realized that to stay in the game, they need to learn how to use the latest technologies. As a survival instinct within organizations, the employees have evolved and are better at skill acquisition regarding new technologies. Since it has been statistically proven that most employees agree that more skilled people are required to operate IT tools yet they also hold the opinion that the implementation of IT also boosts the Human Capital (Bresnahan, Brynjolfsson, & Hitt, 2000).

In recent years with the introduction of combined curriculum such as Management Information Systems (MIS) and other collaborative programs in universities, the IT department is fully aware of how the business department functions, and mistakes regarding the implementation of wrong equipment due to the lack of communication between the departments. However in recent years one phenomena noted regarding corporate America and its IT situation is that many IT jobs are being outsourced to Asian countries where IT support is not only more efficient but also done at a very low cost (Overby, 2003).

This has resulted in numerous jobs leaving the United States and going to countries such as India and Pakistan. Another problem in recent years is due to a weak economy. In such times, companies usually wish to downsize and to limit their resources to simply those things which they need dire support from. Corporate America is still reeling from the aftermath of the financial breakdown as numerous companies have gone bankrupt and the remaining ones are trying to stay afloat. In these times we can see an accelerated search for cheaper alternatives due to which outsourcing is looking more and more appealing.

However, a positive side to this situation is that though we will not be seeing any increased spending or growth in the IT sector of corporations, companies will start utilizing more and more from their existing IT infrastructure. Software handling Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Workforce Performance Management (WPM) are becoming increasingly popular since they automatically generate tables and create forms which hold the relevant data without having to go through numerous different papers.

Not only that, but IT has enabled streamlining within different departments so that relevant data can be shared throughout the entire organization and it becomes easily retrievable and accessible to the relevant parties. The Future of IT in Corporate America IT holds infinite potential for businesses. It allows the storage of thousands of databases providing organizations with a detailed collection of information from which more accurate forecasts can be made.

It has helped marketing professionals in better catering to the needs of their customers as they can not only save the customers details and easily recall them, but can also provide more insight into buyer behavior and allow for cross tabulations. IT has helped the medical profession by improving their inter-department operations and providing doctors with a more detailed account of the patient’s history than ever before. IT has helped in improving quality control in production departments of organizations.

Besides these operational advantages, IT has also helped in curbing frauds, and thefts from organizations due to a more transparent system. It is easier to apprehend people stealing company resources now with the help of IT integration within the organizations. Keeping these positives in mind, we can see the future of IT playing a more significant role in operations as it is no longer restricted to tech support but instead also deals with the basic day to day operations of organizations. Employing the correct equipment to the organization can help organizations save on different levels of their operations.

From customer support to quality control to helping top level management make correct timely decisions based on the most recent data. The internet is a backbone to IT as it enables multinationals to communicate with each other while helping everyone else to simply access information and resources. With the improvements in the internet technology, due to stimulus package being injected into broadband capabilities, we can hope for a faster economical internet which would help with communication amongst branches and companies (Tucker, 2009).

Due to improvement in technology over the years, IT equipment is not only getting cheaper but is improving in its performance as well. So in the future we can look forward to cheaper more productive equipment to help in operations of the business. Conclusion In recent years due to a slowing down of economy we can expect not much progress to take place in the IT sector in Corporate America. But no recession stays forever, and in 2-3 years we can expect a turn around and IT will play a much more important role in the entire operations of businesses than ever before.

Growth in the IT sector and improvement in operational activities will help organizations overcome the past uneconomical years and organizations will be able to get greater benefits from the improved internet services which will be taken care of.
