Centuries and scores of development have flourished the world with towering skyscrapers and new inventions that led to the efficiency and ease in the life of humanity. The rapid advancement of human creativity led not only the expansion of territories but also the efficiency of transportation around the globe. In fact, you can now take breakfast in Italy, sip coffee in Colombia and have a candle light dinner in Chicago. Transportation nowadays is far more advanced and rapid compared to the past decades.
Among the highlights of en masse engineering of transportation in the history is the Transcontinental Railway of the United States built in the 1861-1869 by the Union Pacific Railroad. The history of building an “impossibly huge and long railway” traces back in the history where man is just contented with powered steam trains in each State in the US. In those days, people from the eastern side of the country took a long time before reaching to the eastern side. As such many had propose with the construction of a railway the will have and extent of crossing the horizontal axis of the country (School Improvement in Maryland, 2008).
Historically, a merchant named Asa Whitney in 1844 proposed to the US congress the construction of a railway that that will link a better trading process between the merchants of the eastern side. But the congress failed to ratify the said idea because of the impossibility of engineering that time because equipments were not so advanced and the project is very costly. This made Whitney to give up on the proposal. Later after two decades, the breakthrough of gold in California paved way for the construction of the railway as funds are now available. It also changed the notion the Westside is just a damp of useless mountains.
After the election of Abraham Lincoln as the new president, the senate and the congress had ratified the construction of the railway which covers 3,000 miles long covering the horizontal land area of the country passing major deserts, plains and even mountains. Three companies were also contracted to facilitate the completion of the project- Union Pacific Railroad, Central Pacific Railroad, and the Union Pacific Eastern Division (Construction Company. com,2006). Along the line of construction, many impediments had made it slow such as the American Civil War.
Consequently, after the damages had been repaired, the continuation of the railroad had been rapid casting out all the obstacles such as environmental hazards. On the 10 of May 1869, the “impossible” railway proposed in the early years had been completed and made the whole world amaze while the US made a breakthrough for the said project (Farlex Inc. , 2008). The implication of the railroad built by the Americans made a great impact on many first world countries like Japan and United Kingdom to imitate the project that was built. Interestingly, it was a living testimony of the saying “No mountains so High”.
With the advent of the railway, the transportation between the far sides of the country affected the dynamic development of the country through efficient and rapid delivery of many materials through out the country. Through it the economic state of the country had significantly increased. Military men were also transported easily. Adding to that, telecommunication was also pioneered for development (Acceleration Watch, 2008). In as much as there are positive effects on the construction of the railway, some negative effects were also observed. Among them was the displacement of Native Americans by the white men.
Nowadays, the railroad is the remembrance of the few Native Americans that they were greatly displaced by the whites in the east due to increased migration rate (Nee and Theler, 2006). Today, the concept of railway meridian expansion has made the some engineers to do a replica of the railway but in different manner. One example is the creation of tunnel trains; magnetic levitated trains that will transport people in less that an hour due to its rapid speed and a possible ocean tunnel in the future that will link many countries around the world. The idea of the railway constructed by the US may simply define how globalization is slowly fulfilling.
