The Superiority Race in Hard and Flash Drives
As of today, the normal capacity of an MP3 player is about 500 songs or 35 movies. But according to a press release of a research sponsored by IBM, these numbers would only be part of the history of media players, as they were announcing that they were moving closer to electronic memory that combines the best attributes of flash drives (common in digital cameras and cell phones) and the hard disk drives of computers. Looking ahead… The Race for Superiority in Hard and Flash Drives
According to a press release of IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose last April 10, their scientists are now moving closer to electronic memory that combines the best attributes of flash drives (common in digital cameras and cell phones) and the hard disk drives of computers. They had said that within the next 10 years, their so-called “racetrack memory” named because of the data “races” around the wire “track” would give the additional 100 times capacity to an mp3 player meaning it could then hold 500,000 songs or 3,500 movies.
Dr. Stuart Parkin, the project’s lead researcher had said, “”The promise of racetrack memory – for example, the ability to carry massive amounts of information in your pocket – could unleash creativity leading to devices and applications that nobody has imagined yet. ” Furthermore, it was said that storage in Racetrack memory would then use less power, generate less heat and be practically unbreakable unlike hard disk because it would not have moving parts.
Last but not the least improvement they were foreseeing in racetrack memory is that it would overcome the major weakness of current flash drives which is after a few thousand times of rewrite, it would then start to deteriorate. Computer memory had then had a great evolution starting from using expensive registers only for computers leading to other cheaper forms of memory devices like caches and hard disks, hence forming what we now call memory hierarchy.
As of today, Computer memory is now on its way of improving its capabilities not only for desktop computing but also to portable hand held devices requiring memory chips. With the different researches continually sponsored by pioneer companies of the field of information technology, we, the end-users would then be amazed that maybe for the near future, we would be experiencing a great change in technology is then offering to us.
