Un-schooling

Un-schooling is a variety of educational practices and philosophies which aim to allow children to learn through natural life encounters. Learning is usually child directed and it includes social interaction, work experience, household responsibilities, game play and play. The role of the adult in this case is to facilitate as children explore different activities. Home schooling refers to the type of education whereby the children are educated at home often by tutors or parents rather than in formal educational institutions like schools.

It is a legal option which is used by parents to offer a learning environment to their children as an alternative to the schools which are publicly provided (Hartnett, p 24). Advantages of un-schooling include children getting to appreciate that learning does not only occur in a classroom situation, rather; it can occur anywhere. There is independence on the part of the children since they learn that they do not have to use adults’ directions rather; they are capable of learning things without assistance. To children, learning without being restricted becomes an adventure.

It allows children to pursue their own interests and it is possible to have it irrespective of one’s living situation. Its disadvantages include parents fearing that their children might not be educated wholly. Children might also leave out the subjects which do not interest them. Some opponents of un-schooling feel that it needs people who are more focused since it is easy to deviate from the goal of educating a child (Lerch, p 52). Some of the advantages associated with home schooling include parents being in a position to teach their children in a one on one kind of situation.

This gives the children more attention from the teacher thus fostering their understanding. Parents also claim that home schooling helps the children to spend more time with their families promoting family unity. Home school situation offers safety to children since parents do not have to worry about bullies and such things. Home schooled children are less likely to be influenced by peer pressure since there is less interaction with other children. The parents choose what is to be learnt by their children and allow their children to learn at their own pace.

On the other hand, in home school situations, children become lonely due to lack of socialization. Children do not benefit from extra curricula activities offered in school. Home schooling also isolates parents because most of their time is spent teaching their children. The children fail to enjoy the programs and services which are availed in school systems (Hartnett, p 33). There is no specific curriculum for un-schoolers. Un-schooling operates on the principle that learning is an activity which takes place anytime at any place.

This means that the un-schoolers do not stick to one specific curriculum, rather their parents chose all kinds of educational materials for their children with their assistance. This means that most people make their own curriculum and do not have to buy the already made curriculums. Home schooling does not have a specific curriculum either. Most home schoolers purchase the already made curriculum from curriculum resources. They can use different programs and can modify the curriculum depending on the needs of their children (Lerch, p 56).

Negative effects of un-schooling are that learning might not take place at all if a child or the parent is not motivated to do anything. At the same time, children might engage in many activities without any learning taking place. Children might also miss out on important aspects of learning because they are not in their areas of interest. Some children are also very dependent and might fail to learn because they have no one to direct their learning. Negative effects of home schooling are that if the parent is not serious enough with the education of the children and does not want to hire a tutor, no learning might take place.

Some parents are also not highly educated and if such a parent has a gifted child depending on him, he might not be of much help. It needs parents and children who can make educational goals and stick to them, people who are not like this might not succeed in home schooling. Un-schooling home schoolers are people who allow the learning of their children to be self directed but they also follow a certain curriculum (Rivero, p 12). Un-schooling is considered a good choice of education especially among its supporters.

It is felt that the fact that children learn anytime anywhere motivates them and they perceive learning as an adventure. It is also likely to promote creativity and innovation among children. It is more applicable in life because it is through real life experiences that children learn. On the other hand, home schooling is a preferred choice among some people since they feel that it promotes family togetherness and children are allowed to learn at their own pace. Parents also feel proud to be in a position to make decisions regarding the education of their children.

Children are likely to understand more since the tutor’s or parent’s concentration is on them (Hartnett, p 39). The laws and regulations for un-schooling and home schooling are different in every state. Both are legal. Since un-schooling is a subset of home schooling, most states have the same laws regarding both. For example in Tennessee, parents are required to present an intent notice to local superintendent. They have to keep attendance records which would be inspected by the superintendent. De-schooling is the process of acclimatizing between attending school and home schooling.

It is usually experienced by the children who are taken to school but later are withdrawn from them and afford home schooling (Rivero, p 20). There are several reasons why people would opt to attend public schools compared to home schooling. First, education in public schools is free hence more economical compared to home schooling. Second, parents already know what to expect in terms of curriculum unlike home schooling where they have to choose the most applicable one. Third, it allows children to socialize hence avoiding the loneliness which might occur for home schoolers.

Fourth, the instruction methods are competitive compared to home schooling where teaching might be undertaken by a parent who did not score highly in school (Hartnett, p 42).
