Waste & resources

Every individual need resources in order to sustain their basic needs. Natural resources play an important role in giving individuals their means of sustenance especially with regards to their food and shelter. Nevertheless, the products that are created out of these raw materials are also the main reason for the existence of numerous wastes in the world. This is attributed to the fact that most people do not know how to properly handle the waste that they produce from their everyday activities.

Being the case, it is important that proper knowledge regarding waste management is given due attention. Waste management has three components namely: solid waste, liquid waste, and gaseous waste. Solid waste pertains to non-liquid and non-soluble materials that include municipal garbage up to industrial wastes. These industrial wastes have complex and even hazardous substances. Sewage sludge, agricultural refuse, and demolition wastes as well as mining residues are recognized as solid wastes. Liquid waste is produced through the decomposition of organic matter.

This is exemplified by the leachate, which is the toxic that seeped through a landfill or compost site and has already contain bacteria or other harmful dissolved. Gaseous waste is the pollution that is found in the air and often characterized by odorous compounds. This is observable in most factories that emit dark and toxic air due to their machineries (Diaz et. al, 2006). Landfills are regarded as the oldest form of waste management. It is also known as a dump, which is a site wherein waste materials are dispose through burial.

In the United States, the existence of modern-day landfills has benefited the country by addressing the problem of garbage burning. Before, majority of Americans lived in rural farming communities wherein they burned garbage that is very harmful to the environment. Nevertheless, the disadvantageous effect of landfills can be seen through the methane emissions from the dump of garbage, which can be absorbed in the ground water and the water that is consume by people (Diaz et. al, 2006). Recycling is one of the most advisable forms of waste management.

This can be applied at home especially since many wastes are produce through family consumption. Some ways to recycle wastes accumulated from the household are: re-using plastic bags, buying recycled paper and printing on both sides, recycle old newspapers, buy rechargeable batteries, and re-use your coffee cup. These five ways of recycling help the environment because it reduces and at the some time consumers can save more and spend less by recycling. In relation to this, my family also recycles. We re-use products like plastics bags, plastic cups, spoon and fork.

We also segregate our wastes by separating the biodegradable from the non-biodegradable. We adhere to recycling because we are really concern about the problems in the environment like global warming and we want to contribute something to address it. Moreover, we are also reaping its benefits because we save more out of recycling.
