The Cause and Effect

The compositor of the three different short fiction stories showed significance on their epic. The Araby, the A&P and The Jilting of Granny Weatherall, all uses vanity as the root to their concept that had played a significant role in the story as a whole and helps transform the story from having simple, typical and dull scene into something intriguing and insightful. Each writer uses the cause and effect method in conveying their theme of the story which produces vanity as the product.

Vanity which defines as an excessive pride in one’s appearance, qualities, abilities or achievements; or refers to a character or quality of being vain; lack of real value; hollowness; worthlessness or something worthless, trivial or pointless. Though the three short fictional stories portrays similar display of how’s one character can be affected or vanitied by invoking a cause that trigger’s an unpleasant effect to its persona, the causes in the situation each writer used differs.

Like for instance in the Araby story, the writer uses the character’s emotion to be the main cause that generates different unpleasant behavior as an effect. The writer’s transition of his story starts from the character’s hidden admiration to a woman who was the sister of his friend. His hidden admiration towards the girl was the first cause that generates an effect which was a feeling of quite pleasure while thinking of the girl whom he ought to bring something in his incoming journey to Araby.

The character’s determination to fulfill his word was the second cause the writer had used to produce another unlikable trait which was an excessive pride. This trait was seen when the character faces the many obstacles that came in his way before and during his journey. From complacency to total vanity, that’s how the quest of the displayer transformed in the end of the story which was define by the character’s realization of having Cause and Effect 2 worthlessness, uselessness and hopelessness to his purpose and feelings towards the girl he secretly fell in love with.

The writer of the J&P fiction story on the other hand uses situation or event as the main key of generating different unlikable traits. His plot started from the unconscious yet manly admiration or interest of the character to the girls who walked in their store wearing inappropriate clothing. The character’s pretentious act of heroism mainly to impressed the girls whom he thinks (in the characters own perception) were victim of unfair criticism from his superior, was the effect that rooted from his manly desire.

His ostentation kind of behavior that produced negative gesture, then connect to another effect that was seen from the character by means of quitting his job. From that particular behavior, another effect was produce which was seen when the character was force to stand on his word, after stating an unintentionally words to his superior which was “I quit”. The effect was his excessive pride in the given situation. The aftermath of the character’s causes and effect were seen when the character realize his sudden act of insanity and the needlessness of his heroic act that led him to vainness and uncertain future.

Unlike the first and second story where the writers uses one root cause as their means of invoking another cause which generates several negative attitudes, the author of “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” did not interconnect the causes but emphasized one cause that triggers an effect which was total vanity. The writer used the event which was the old woman’s time to face death but could not accept dying. This event was the writer used as the cause that generates several unlikable behaviors.

In the portrayal, the character fail to accept death and was egotism or excessive when she refers to herself and plead her grounds as to why she should not be dying. She believe that she still possess strong health and was still capable of doing her chores and needless to accept help from the doctor and all the people Cause and Effect 3 around her; whom dutiful and concerned over her fading life. This behavior of the character portrayed was the product of the characters excessive pride over her achievements in life as a woman, a wife and a mother to her children.

Her reminiscence to her past was her grounds of believing her potential of continuing her daily duties and continuing living. But her eagerness to be heard, to be followed by the people around her in the situation and the rejection or the refusal respond that she had receive was the characters realization of her worthlessness and uselessness in pursuing what she wants. Her vainness in the situation was the characters cue that she was indeed facing her death but her excessive pride made her reluctant to accept death.

Clearly, the writers of the three fictional stories used the same method which was the cause and effect of certain events, emotion or situation, in conveying the theme of their stories. The deliberation or portrayal may have differed but the roots of each concept were identical. Each of the writers emphasized the similarities of how the characters became pretentious that had led them to do something which they should had not meant to be purposely be doing which made them feel ineffective and worthless in the given situation.

And how each character brought foolishness to their selves in the end. The total evaluation of the three stories shows how each character suffered vanity. But the lesson each writers indicates was that every individual may be affected or vanitied regardless of age, gender, culture or status in life. And that vanity surfaces in an unexpected situation.
