Jessica Smith, beloved family member and well-respected psychologist, passed away on December 12, 2008 after battling an extended illness. Jessica dedicated her life to the realization of her dreams. She selflessly loved her family and cherished the roles of wife to Patrick Smith, daughter to Phil and Margaret Leonard, and “Aunt Jess” to seven nieces and nephews who will never forget her fun-loving spirit and contagious laughter. Always anxious for the next adventure, Jessica left home after high school to pursue her degree in psychology from the University of California.
She loved the sun, sand, and surf, but was ecstatic to return home after successfully graduating with honors. Jessica applied her love of family to work as a therapist. She positively changed the lives of countless children by mending the thread of their families. Jessica taught parents how to express the love they hold for their children and she protected the most vulnerable members of our community. She once stated she, “could not imagine her life without the opportunity to work with children.
” Jessica truly made the world a better place and her legacy will live on for generations to come. A visitation will be held in Jessica’s memory on Wednesday December 17 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the DelRay Funeral Home. A mass will be held at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church on Thursday December 18 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, please donate toys or funds to the Toys for Tots organization. This is just one of many worthy charities that benefited from Jessica’s hard work and dedication.
Contributions in her honor will also be made to the Challenged Athletes Foundation and Save the Children. A balloon ceremony will follow mass. Each family or friend in attendance will be asked to record a memory of Jessica on a slip of paper. Those unable to attend mass can drop off messages during visitation. Jessica has loved cards and letters for longer than she’s been able to read or write. She decorated her walls with notes and cards from loved ones. This will be our last chance to send her a message of love and appreciation for the life she shared with us.
