Pollution in United States: A matter of grave concern.
United States like many other developed countries is facing the problem of pollution. The result of this increasing pollution level is adversely affecting the health of human beings. Actually Pollution is defined as the contamination in the natural substances as air, water, soil etc. Although pollution occurrence may be natural, which occurs due to any uncontrollable activity or we may say natural calamity of the earth. For instance, when volcanoes erupt, it emits lots of harmful gases and smoke in the air and leaves harmful byproducts in water. Similarly, occurrence of Tsunami increases salinity of soil.
These are such cases where the pollution is beyond our control. But if we think carefully than these natural calamities hardly makes any difference as the way we are making. We use millions of motor vehicles in our every day life, which emits lots of harmful gases in the environment, thereby contaminating air. We cut trees and forest to make our way through them, to build house and furniture from wood, thus contaminating soil. And not only that we even pollute water so heavily by throwing lots of toxic industrial waste, polythene and garbage, that every big city has now a toxic river flowing through its outskirts.
Writer. 2. Types of pollution material and their source of emission: A number of pollution materials are responsible for contaminating our earth and its natural environment. Following are the few noteworthy pollutant materials. 1. Carbon monoxide, Chlorofluorocarbons, Sulfur dioxide and finally nitrogen dioxide are such harmful gases which are responsible for destabilizing the natural contents of air. Their emission occurs through our vehicles, industrial chimneys, sprays and perfumes, rocket emission. These gases further damage the ozone layer and results in acid rain.
Not only that many skin problems to the humans today are the result of the extra emission of these harmful gases. 2. Harmful chemicals and hydrocarbons are mixed in the water so as to drain the waste products of the industry. Along with that plastic bags garbage is also dumped in the water as the wastage of consumer goods. 3. Use of pesticides, herbicides, chlorinated hydrocarbons, heavy metals which are spilled on earth either for production of food grain or due to negligence both results in causing soil pollution. A number of adverse effects on humans have been observed. These are as follows. 1. Drinking polluted water can results in sickness and even death of a person. 2. Polluted air can result in increasing respiratory diseases, chest pain, congestion, eye inflammation and other cardiovascular diseases. 3. The touch of chemicals and oil spills can results in skin irritation and even inflammation at soft body parts as eyes, nose, ears etc. 4. Noise pollution can result in hearing losses, stress and high blood pressure. Comparing individual polluting habits in urban and rural environment:
There is as lot of difference between pollution habits in rural and urban areas. But the adverse effects and consequences are the same. Following is the comparison made between the individual polluting habits in rural and urban areas. 1. In rural areas use of wood and coal is common which results in pollution at daily rate. Writer. 4. While in the urban areas clean Liquefied Petroleum Gas or LPG and even electricity is used to make food. But then the daily level pollution is made through industrial chimneys, generators and vehicles like motor cars, bikes etc. 2.
In rural areas, pollution control systems do not work effectively in the fields. That is people does not hesitate using the maximum amount of harmful pesticides for production of commodities like wheat, barely, rice and saving them from pests. While in the urban areas, people does not use pesticides for some commodity but they use these harmful pesticides in their house to kill rats, mosquitoes, cockroaches etc. 3. In rural areas, people contaminate water by throwing garbage in the water source. While in urban areas plastic bags are thrown in the water sources.
Is there Destruction Ahead? Looking at the present status of pollution problem, some people believe that the destruction of mankind is just ahead. Reason behind is that people are not taking any concrete step to stop contaminating the natural environment and preserve it. Writer. 5. Still if we stay optimistic than we can say that a lot of steps at world level are taken by governments of different countries to stop the causes of green house effect and various other harmful emissions from industrial units.
Although complete success in this way, has not been achieved yet. Still the efforts are showing results by some way or the other. That is people around the world are now showing interest in cleaning their surrounding and eradicating plastic bags from their daily routine. The governments of various countries are building laws on preserving natural environment and natural habitat. Thus if these efforts went on continuously than one day we may reach our target of saving our world from destruction that may come due to the unfortunate pollution problem.
Conclusion: Pollution in the United States and other countries has reached its highest levels from the past decades. Therefore it is an urgent need of the United State government to take some concrete steps at the ground level to overcome the problem of pollution. Other than that, people should themselves come forward to fight back this problem and cooperate with their respective governments to preserve their nature and put an end to the problem of pollution for themselves and for their children.
