It is because among the major cities in the United States, the said two cities have driven the fascination of non-Americans for these embody what the US is for them: a country of opulence and entertainment. Los Angeles, on the other hand, is the country’s second most populous city and metropolitan area in 2006, having 3,849,378 Angelinos in the city proper and 17,755,322 million in the metropolitan area. These two cities also exude influence and power more than any other American city. New York is the home of the New York Stock Exchange, New York is the foremost financial center of the United States and of the whole world.

It is also a leading global city, with influence encompassing the fields of commerce, finance, culture, fashion and entertainment. Meanwhile, Los Angeles is home to Hollywood, “Entertainment Capital of the World,” where major American motion picture studios and recording companies are situated. It is also the centers of business, international trade, culture, media, fashion, science, technology, and education in the world. The population of these two cities is among the most culturally heterogeneous in the US.

Considerable part of the population of these two cities is immigrants. In 2005, nearly 170 languages were spoken in New York City and 36% of its population was born outside US (The Newest New Yorkers). The racial distribution in Los Angeles varies from White American, African American, Asian American, Native American, to Pacific Islanders, from other races, and from two or more races.
