George Berkeley and Subjective Idealism

Subjective Idealism or the philosophy of perception, this was first proposed by George Berkeley- the eighteenth century thinker who stands in the leading row of modern age thinkers. The Irish philosopher and bishop anticipated a theory that is unlike ‘Objective Idealism’. His principle was explained in the proposition, which suggests ‘no existence is feasible’. This different theory is named as ‘Subjective Idealism’. This idealism is generally considered as the view of supreme of individual’s mind.

For an instance, when a person sees a familiar object, what he/she really observes is the idea of that object in his/her mind. Here, the topic is whether that object exists independently of the idea or it was in the mind. If it is same then how does one know that his idea was a portrait of it; it is next to impossible for anybody to compare his/her idea of the object to the object itself. One can observe his idea only. A Normal human mind is composed of ideas instead of objects, thus his/her mind cannot give an authentication of the existence of any living/nonliving body.

Even if, one touches or smells the body, these sensations create nothing but the idea in the mind. Complicatedness with the idea- In accordance with subjective idealism, no corporeal system or sense is able to authenticate that external world of objects is free from the perception that exists in mind. This idealism also creates confusion on the nature of the mind such as will, desire, emotion or feeling. It also raises question that are they aspects George Berkeley and Subjective Idealism 3 of mind or not as these are the situations when perception/consciousness becomes comparable to the mind.

George Berkley- Famed as the originator of British Tradition of Idealism, Berkley was an anti-materialist, who refused to agree that the object could exist on its own uncorroborated by a higher spiritual authenticity. Known as ‘essi is percipi’, his famous suggestion supported that ‘existence occurs through perception only’. In accordance with Berkeley, all human ideas, thought and passions exists within the mind. Anything that is counted outside of the mind is ‘incomprehensible’; it is unfeasible for a human mind to think about it.

Hence, everything that is considered out of mind is meaningless. These are unperceivable, as we cannot receive any sensory inputs from them. He said that even senses are meaningless for minds other than the one that receives them. All the ideas related to objects are derived from sensations or it is a form of pre-set ideas in the mind. According to him, every object needs a mind to perceive it. It is possible for none to imagine or locate a thing that is distinct from the sensation and perception. He also suggested that mythical ideas too are an outcome of montage of perceptions.

Giving a clear picture of his doctrine in the book ‘Principles of Human Knowledge’, Berkley clarifies that overview of a particle lies according to the mental construction of the observer, irrespective of their size. Conclusion Writer’s Opinion- Proffering the doctrine of the mind, Bishop George Berkley wonderfully dabbles with his insight. The anti-intellectual empiricist philosopher marks a distinct state of progress in thoughts of a normal human being. Subjective idealism much resembles the ‘Phenomenalism’ that tells about mind’s ability to perceive in accordance with phenomenon. Citation 1. Modern-thinker. co. uk
