There are five dimensions of personality which are used to exhibit human personality. They are a contemporary finding of the modern psychology and commonly used in all spheres of work. These are generally calculated with a percentile and contain five major traits viz: Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism or emotional stability. Openness: Openness is termed as a wide-ranging approval for fine art, sentiment, quest, unique ideas, thoughts, imagination, inquisitiveness, and diversity of occurrence. This trait differentiates inventive folk from humble, conformist ones.
Individuals who remain open to experience are scholarly, inquisitive, enthusiastic of art, and receptive to beauty. As compared to closed up people, they are more artistic and familiar with their emotions. They are prone to have eccentric mindsets. People who are low on openness trait are inclined to be often conservative and conventional bent of mind. They admire the simple, undemanding, and apparent over the intricate, uncertain, and subtle. Conscientiousness Conscientiousness refers to the propensity to exhibit character-regulation, acting loyally, and aspiring for accomplishment.
This attribute demonstrates a predilection to work organized instead of spur-of-the-moment activities. It affects the manner in which one organizes, adjusts, and straightens his/her impulses. Conscientiousness comprises of psychological element termed as Need for Achievement (NAch). As the consciousness ones are very scrupulous, dedicated and hard working, they may fit in all sort of jobs and exhibit their full potentials. Besides, they keep an eye on Extraversion Extraversion is distinguished by optimistic emotions, passion, and the predisposition to search for socializing accompanied with others.
The trait is characterized by immense meeting with the outside world. Extraverts take pleasure in being surrounded by people, and always energetic. They act freakish and over passionate individuals always outgoing, receptive to excitement. They rule in groups and are always center of attention in there. Unlike extraverts, introverts don not like to socialize and possess low activity levels. They remain quiet, premeditated, and less engrossed in outside activities. This doesn’t mean introverts are shy or nervous. They just crave less spur as compared to extraverts and spend more time on their own.
Agreeableness Agreeableness is an inclination to be sympathetic, and supportive rather than doubtful and aggressive towards others. The attribute replicates personal dissimilarities in common apprehension for peace keeping and general agreement. Agreeables are considered to be understanding, welcoming, bighearted, cooperative, and compromising. Agreeable people possess a positive view of other humans. They perceive other individuals as truthful, trustworthy, and upright. On the contrary, disagreeable people hold self-concern over and above everything else.
Normally they are indifferent about others’ welfare, and are less likely to do favors for other people. At times, this attitude causes them to be skeptic, unwelcoming, and unhelpful. Neuroticism: Neuroticism or emotional stability is a measure to undergo feelings and emotional control. Feelings like rage, nervousness, or dejection. It is often termed as emotional instability. Those with high neuroticism are generally imprudent and susceptible to constant worry. They infer normal state of affairs as intimidating, and difficult.
Their feelings and emotions last very long i. e. they are habitually in a bad mood. On the other hand, individuals with low neuroticism are less likely to get upset on petty matters and are considered proactive. Suitable Jobs: Since, extraverts are social butterflies; they may fit in social kind of jobs such as family and general practitioners, public relations’ specialists, employment interviewers, computer support specialists, sales managers/salespersons, lawyers, counseling psychologists, teacher trainers, educational administrators, personal recruiters, etc.

Firstly, the interested candidates will be called to take a personality test, which will later be processed by the computer to place into appropriate traits according to the five personality models.
It will be then led by interviews and other processes to finalize the applicants. This will help employers to place the employees according to their attributes and personality traits. The will provide a sketch to the company as to how the candidates will perform in particular situations and decision making scenarios. Though such tests may serve as useful tools in recruiting good individuals, but the real show begins when they descend into the workplace. Therefore, it is said that these tests are not hundred percent reliable.
Conclusion: The finding of the big five model has greatly facilitated modern psychology and all spheres of work but they are no rocket science or hard and fast rules. An individual may be estimated extravert as per personality tests but he may not be that in real life. He may possess attributes of all models. Therefore such situations leave a question mark on the viability of this renowned model. However, in hiring individuals such tests may provide a very helpful insight. References:
