Persuasive writing

Looking at Count Dracula, the Sesame Street variety, I oftentimes find myself wondering whether or not mathematics indeed has any application in the career which I wish to pursue. In fact, aside from those who take up engineering and finance, it stands to reason why any of us should even bother to study mathematics all the way until college. It seems that it is all a basic waste of time and that the important math lessons that are needed are already taught in grade school and anything more than that is just an academic waste of space.

Others feel that there are other more important things to study and Mathematics just does not have the appeal that other “more practical” subjects have. While this may be the common sentiment shared by most, there are actually several reasons why mathematics is important. From the practical perspective, mathematics is essential to have a successful career. The study of mathematics has been shown to not only engage the mind in a logical manner thus improving the way people deal with other situations. There is very little reasoning in mathematics.

In fact, it can be said that mathematics is the most precise for the simple reason that one plus one will always become two. There is no two ways about this and no amount of inference or reasoning will change that fact. The training that this provides is basic and is greatly appreciated in the real world application. The challenge that mathematics poses to the student simulates certain real world situations and as such, training students and developing that type of thinking is crucial for one’s success in whatever career they decide to pursue.

Alternatively, mathematics can be considered as useful for the reason that it is more than just numbers. While mathematics is a very precise subject, it also allows for inferences. It has been said that everything in the universe can be explained by mathematics. Though this writer does not necessarily submit to this academic postulate, it can be argued that mathematics can feasibly explain almost every natural occurrence in nature or provide an accurate explanation of the matter.

Every physics equation involves numbers, yet these numbers are not exact definitions but are rather a method for arriving at a better understanding of the phenomenon. The role that it plays is that it provides for a medium of simplifying complex matters and thus allows the human mind to understand complex situations in simple terms that can be processed. This is, perhaps, one of the greatest “values” of mathematics.

If these “weighty” arguments are not convincing enough, mathematics is essential because it is difficult and learning it is all part of the fun package that education brings. The statement, Math is fun, is no oxymoron and indeed the satisfaction of having completed ones educational degree and knowing that one has completed one of man’s most dreaded of subjects should more than compensate for the troubles that it brings. Human experience is built on exactly that, experience.

It is from this that man is able to test his mettle and ensure his survival. It is from triumph over adversity that man emerges victorious. Mathematics can be seen as one of those essential challenges that ensure that only the fittest survive and that man will continue to move forward. There is no end to the reasons why mathematics is important or how it can be applied since this discourse has ably shown that there is indeed no limit to what can be accomplished with math.

Perhaps the most important argument comes from the simple fact that it is said that the one thing that nobody can ever take away from you is your education. As the world continues to change and the workplace becomes more and more challenging and competitive, it becomes imperative for anyone looking for a successful career to not only have the drive to succeed but also the training and expertise to do so. This is why I believe that an mathematics is necessary and this is why I believe that in order to be a success in life one needs to not only know his ABCs but also his One Two Threes.
