Lifetime to accomplish

The initiative in creating change has always been an integral aspect of man. Equipped with their relative skills and competencies, they engage in various efforts to create opportunities that will improve their capabilities and cater to the service of individuals. Amidst the trials and difficulties in the process, hard work and determination remains to be a vital factor in attaining their desired objectives and purpose in life. It is with this mindset, that I begin this five year career development plan. The pursuit of one’s goals and dreams are journeys that oftentimes take a lifetime to accomplish.

There are those who reach the end of their lives not accomplishing what they wanted to do because they were either too intimidated by the prospect of even embarking on such a quest or they did not have the right opportunities in life. I have been working for a number of years and during that time I have had plenty of time to see my career develop as my life passed by. Yet, there comes a certain point in one’s life when one must make a firm decision, a commitment to something much more than one’s own personal goals. Oftentimes, this means sacrificing one for the other.

There are those, however, who are lucky enough to have their own personal goals and that pursuit for higher objectives converge. For me, this is the pursuit of a career in business. In order to begin the pursuit of this career, it is important to first lay out the educational objectives that are necessary. Graduate Studies present challenges and difficulties for every student. Statistics from studies have shown that roughly half of all incoming doctoral students will drop out, two-thirds of whom will do so during their second and third years.

Graduate Studies also require a lot of time and commitment. There are no scheduled breaks for graduate school unlike in undergraduate studies where there are winter, spring, summer, and fall breaks off. Pursuing graduate studies entails that a student must be able to keep up with the academic load that is required while at the same time be able to deal with the other demands off campus. As such, in order to succeed in the development of my five year career development plan, I must be able to gain the proper training and education.

My long-term goal ambition is to expand my family’s real-estate project into a more comprehensive project that would not only increase financial return to the family’s portfolio, but also add value to the community. Currently, the project consists of a community mall, a gas station, and a commercial building rented office. In the future, I look to expand the project into a one-stop quintessential destination that includes financial services, restaurants, and educational facilities.

I also hope to expand our business geographically, first by utilizing our land banks in the area, and later by pursuing overseas expansions as we build on our reputation. During my past work experiences, I have often come across as witty and amiable. Yet, I am no push over when it comes to working in a corporate or business environment. I firmly believe that I can succeed in anything that I want to as long as I work hard at it. I get things done. The job gets done faster and more efficiently as and when the objectives are clear, the strategies acceptable, and the resources are available.

Of course, in the real world, these do not always happen. To the extent that they happen and to the extent that I can make them happen, I go after them and manage to get the job done. In addition to my educational background, I also possess very good professional experience which will invariably help me achieve my goals. One experience that comes to mind is when I worked on multibillion dollar projects, working with international clients such as Imperial Oil Limited and Nexen Incorporated.

The environment is very competitive and the work is intense as the clients can be very demanding in working on projects like these. This has enabled me to work effectively at a fast pace under a lot of pressure, which I consider crucial in the field of investment and finance. As the world continues to change and the workplace becomes more and more challenging and competitive, it becomes imperative for anyone looking for a successful career to not only have the drive to succeed but also the training and expertise to do so.

I am not saying that I do not have the training and expertise at the moment but I do believe that there is still room for more. The rich and diverse academic community at a graduate program will definitely be the perfect place for me to learn and be prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. The success of my career in five years depends on the variety of assets and commitments that I have had. I have benefited from a multi-cultural mentoring program in college. As an open-minded student, I believe I am able to contribute to not only the cultural diversity, but also the global views of the learning community.

My experience and perspective will greatly benefit those that I will be able to interact with on campus. I look forward to the rich academic and cultural experience that this fine academic institution has to offer. Pursuing my career in business is just the first step in my plan. Much like Nurse Leader Mary Breckenridge has done, I too want to be just more than a nurse. I would like to have the opportunity to take a bigger role in making the world a better place to live. My main philosophy in life is to lead by setting an example.

I cannot expect others to do what I myself would be willing to do but that does not mean that I cannot hope that others will see the example that I have shown them. This philosophy is one of the many forces that drive me to pursue my dream of pursuing a career in business and of becoming so much more in life. The chance to help those who are less fortunate in life, the chance to help others, the opportunity to be of service to humanity; these are the reasons why I have selected nursing as the profession that I will pursue; for, as Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams…”
