The World is Flat, is a book, written by Thomas Friedman. It concentrates on the issue of globalization and how it has changed society and economy of the world. The aim of this paper is to review the book. Ten Forces which led to Flattened World According to Friedman, there are ten forces which have contributed to the flattening of the world. These ten forces include the breakdown of Berlin Wall, Netscape, software for work flow, uploading, outsourcing, off-shoring, insourcing, in-forming and steroids.
He further asserts that these ten factors are not solely responsible for flattening the world. He explains that these ten forced have converged together to further flatten the global world. Triple Convergence The ten factors which have led to the flatter world are not solely responsible for flattening. He explains that all of these factors assembled together, disperse and became the root cause of the flattened environment. The formation of corresponding software, internet and political factors are responsible for accelerating globalization (Friedman, 206)
Economic Changes Necessary for Americans to Compete in the Flat World In order to compete in the flat world, United States of America needs to mass-produce educated and expert workers so that it is able to produce idea-based goods which can be sold in the international market. Friedman concentrates on the issue of providing better education and training as it will create expert workers (Friedman, 311). Relationship between 9/11 and 11/9 Friedman considers 11/9 to be an example of productive imagination and 9/11 as unconstructive imagination.
Ninth of November was the day when Berlin Wall was destroyed and it opened the door to the democratic world. September eleventh was the day which had closed that door (Friedman, 611). Social Consequences of Flat World As a result of flat world, the society has changed. It has assimilated culture, values and beliefs of local culture. It has enabled various individuals to communicate and share their poetry, literature and other views. It has created new opportunities for individuals to express their thoughts and desires.
Dell theory of Conflict Prevention According to Dell Theory of Conflict Prevention, two countries who work together in business and become part of the same global supply chain. This leads to cooperation between them and they concentrate on the success of the joint business venture. Consequently, they will not go on war. Disruptions in the supply chains can give critical consequences (Friedman, 406). Overall, war is a disruption and it will have a negative impact on business world.
Friedman gives China-Taiwan and India-Pakistan as examples to illustrate his Dell theory of conflict prevention and concludes that supply chain has created a calming effect and enabled countries to think sensibly on the true cost of war. Conclusion Friedman has given interesting statements on the topic of flat world. The world is changing and globalization has changed the entire world.
