Farmers and raise cattle
As far back as I can remember, the field of medicine has always fascinated me immensely even in my younger days. From what I can recall, my interest in medicine dates back to my youth, when I first understood how medicine contributed to the health of my community in the recent past. I descend from a family and a town which survived an unforgettably harsh life before becoming rich and prosperous after the discovery of oil. In his childhood, my father used to live in a 2-room mud brick house with ceilings made from palm tree leaves which leaked rain water on cloudy days.
They had no electricity, roads, or even telephones at that time. Most people were illiterate and did not deem education a necessity in life; they were content to merely work as farmers and raise cattle. Walking was also the most common way of travelling. This was the common scenario in my town of Al-ain in the 1960’s. There was only one hospital called the “Oasis Hospital”, which was founded by the Canadian citizens Drs. Pat and Marian Kennedy in 1964. Dr.
Kennedy with his small team of medical practitioners were respected and considered a miracle by the local population then. With the coming of the medical team, the 50% infant mortality rate, the 35% maternal mortality rate and the high death rates from infections dropped dramatically. People loved the Oasis hospital, and parallel to its success, life expectancy in the locality significantly went up. The people felt that they owed a lot to this small 20-bed hospital that saved them and their children’s lives.
By the grace of god, the discovery of oil by the end of 1960’s and by the leadership of our generous ruler, UAE was able to catch up in all aspects of development with rest of the world, and even surpassed some of the major international cities in an extremely short time. The previous landscape of poverty that characterized this country finally found its advancement without much assistance from any external entities. With this progress, there was an increased concern and focus on education which was optimistically received by the majority of UAE citizens.

I grew up with Medicine foremost in my mind, but it was not until my second year in the university that I discovered that I wanted to practice neurology. It was at this time that I was first exposed to the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system.
My peculiar fondness for linking the cause and the effect, combined with the great organization and precision of the nervous system which enables prediction and detection of neurological diseases, sparked my interest in the field. The feature that perhaps fascinates me the most is the close association of the findings in the history and physical exam to the lesion location and etiology. I am attracted to the hands-on nature of neurology and the direct, close patient contact, which helps to build patient rapport and also further challenges my clinical skills.
I also enjoy its major correlation with other medical felids, e. g. Cardiology, Rheumatology, Endocrinology etc, which actually aid to form a more general, holistic, and comprehensive approach. It is one of the most challenging fields in medicine, with many clinical and scientific truths yet to be unraveled. Furthermore, this connotes successful research and new discoveries for the benefit of human health that can be equated with higher opportunities, which make neurology very exciting to me. Indeed, I have found my initial neurological experiences very satisfying and rewarding.
